to a loss, disappointment, or a big or difficult change.
It can range from fleeting feelings of sorrow to deep prolonged mourning.
You already know that sadness lowers your mood, energy, and even metabolism.
Though sadness is NOT just another painful emotion...
Like all emotions, sadness has a purpose
1. Sadness signals that something important has changed or been lost. It’s a way for your mind and body to say, "Pause. Reflect. This Matters." This helps you look at the situation to decide how best to move forward.
2. Sadness also breaks old patterns, so that you can move forward past the loss. That’s why when there’s a big or life changing event, you fall into sadness as the brain realizes your old habits and behaviors will no longer be serving you, so it works to break them.
3. Something that’s not talked about is that sadness puts the body in preservation mode. When we lose a job, loved one, and so on, the brain feels there’s scarcity, and so it slows down your mind and body to deal with the scarcity it believes exists.
With that, sadness is not an emotion to push away or run away from
Too often the immediate impulse is to change or distract yourself from the sadness...
But it’s important to ALLOW and FEEL it.
Like all emotions, sadness WANTS to be felt!
When it’s not, that’s when it grows and becomes unmanageable.
So close your eyes and feel it.
